The Catalyst (bass) - tabbed by Astat Bass 1 - D A D G Bass 2 - D A D G (Semi-overdriven) *Note* The bass on this track is most likely a Fender Precision Bass. There's really only one bass track on this song, but as I've always done with my guitar tabs, I like to note every different effect as a track of its own, hence the "Bass 1/Bass 2" in this song. Both parts are somewhat muted-sounding, it doesn't sound like Phoenix palm-mutes anything though, it sounds more like the bass on this track was just recorded using a bass that had really worn-out strings on it. Anyway, the bass on this track is really simple, no fills or anything to throw you off, just some steady eighth notes for the most part, along with some sustained low D notes at the start of the second verse. One thing to watch out for, there's a very noticeable "clicking" noise when Phoenix mutes the string at the end of the first chorus, so I've included it in the tab. "Bass 1" is pretty clean-sounding and plays during the first verse/chorus. "Bass 2" comes in during the second verse, and plays for the rest of the song. It has a pretty heavy overdrive on it, but not so heavy that it isn't responsive to Phoenix's pick attack - there's a big difference in how it sounds when he starts picking harder (from the second chorus onwards). Phoenix always played this song on a Stingray live and used one in the music video, but the tone of the studio recording really sounds more consistent with a P-Bass. Also, while I originally tabbed this song using both the low D string and the A string, upon closer inspection I'm pretty sure Phoenix plays the whole thing on one string.
