Of particular interest in this song, the "bass" part played throughout the first part of the song isn't actually bass at all, it's a synth sequence. The real bass doesn't come in until the drums do at the beginning of the second verse, which is particularly obvious on the live version of this song, but not so much on the studio recording. Anyway, I've put the synth bass part in the tab for those of you that want to play it, it sounds similar enough to a regular bass that nobody's really going to notice anyway (just make sure you've got some sustain!). As for the "real" bass part, it's very easy, just pump straight eighth notes through the whole song. One small variation to note is that the bass doesn't jump up to the 5th fret at the end of the first line in the chorus after the first guitar solo, like it does on every other repeat. Instead, it stays on the 3rd fret the whole time. Also of note, there are actually two different versions of Shadow of the Day with different arrangements: The version on the Minutes to Midnight Deluxe Edition that was released digitally in late 2012 is a different mix than the one found on the original 2007 release, and on this "new" version, the "real" bass part actually doesn't enter until the first guitar solo (the synth bass continues playing up until that point). Phoenix used a Fender P-Bass on the studio recording of this song, but typically plays it on a Stingray live.
