Shadow of the Day (bass) - tabbed by Astat Bass 1 - Db Ab Db Gb (Synth bass) Bass 2 - Db Ab Db Gb *Note* The bass on this track (excluding the synth bass parts) is a Fender Precision Bass. Of particular interest in this song, the "bass" part played throughout the first part of the song isn't actually bass at all, it's a synth sequence. The real bass doesn't come in until the first guitar solo (on the live version, Phoenix comes in much earlier, right after the first chorus). I've put the synth bass part in the tab for those of you that want to play it, it sounds similar enough to a regular bass that nobody's really going to notice anyway. As for the "real" bass part, it's very easy, just pump straight eighth notes through the whole song. One small variation to note is that the bass doesn't jump up to the 5th fret at the end of the first line in the chorus after the first guitar solo, like it does on every other repeat. Instead, it stays on the 3rd fret the whole time. Phoenix typically played this song on a Stingray live, but the studio recording is absolutely a P-Bass. Note that on the alternate mix of this song that was accidentally released in 2012 (see my guitar tab for a more lengthy explanation), Bass 1 continues through the first guitar solo and following chorus, with Bass 2 not entering until the second guitar solo.
