So this is a much more interesting song on bass than it might seem...first of all, it's a fairly rare case of the guitar and bass in a Linkin Park song being in different tunings. The guitars are in the usual Drop D, half step down tuning on this song, but the bass is actually on a 5-string. Second of all, while the bass was always played in standard tuning live, the studio recording actually has portions that are in standard, and portions that are a half step down! This really comes down to using open strings in certain situations. Bass 1 plays the verses and the second part of the bridge, and it's in standard tuning so that open low B on the bottom string sounds really big when you hit it. Bass 2 handles the choruses and the first half of the bridge, and it's tuned down half a step so the Eb root note is available as an open string. SUPER annoying, but hey, that's the benefit of being able to do whatever you want in the studio, I suppose. You can always play the whole thing in one tuning, and either move all of Bass 1's parts up one fret or all of Bass 2's parts down one fret/move the Eb notes to the low B string. Linkin Park always did the latter, since they also needed a 5 string in standard tuning for With You and Runaway. Given the choice, I'd probably go with the former though, as the verse is a much simpler part overall. Anyway, weird tuning situation aside, the bass really carries this song, it dominates the verses where the guitar plays clean harmonics, and anchors the choruses as well, while the guitar plays long sustained chords. A couple things to watch out for, there are a few variations towards the end of each verse that are easy to miss. The "x/" notation at the end of the first and third lines in the choruses is a strum executed while sliding up from the 3rd to the 10th fret, so there isn't a defined "note" to it. In the second verse, the notes are all sustained, instead of being cut off like they are in the first verse (watch out for the fill at the end of the second line in the second verse too, it only comes up once). There are also a few ghost notes found in this song, there's one at the end of the second chorus, and a few in the second part of the bridge. Play those as you see fit, as they're very understated and "accidental-sounding" compared to the rest of the song. Lastly, there are a couple spots where some of the sustained notes have vibrato on them ("v" symbols), this doesn't happen too often when it comes to Linkin Park bass parts, so watch out for them.
