Use the bridge pickup unless otherwise noted. I've tabbed this tuned down half a step because it's played that way live, and I really have no reason to believe it was recorded any differently. Anyway, a lot of people don't realize just how early in the song the guitar comes in. Guitar 1 enters during the first chorus, doubling the bass part with soft palm-muted notes on the bottom string. This palm-muted guitar continues under the first guitar solo and following chorus. During the outro guitar solo and chorus, there are a total of 4 rhythm guitars that enter the mix. Two of them play powerchords, the other two play octaves. Oddly enough, the guitars that play powerchords during that part move down to an F#5 chord on the second chord of their progression, while the bass actually goes up to a C# note. On the live version, Chester follows the bassline instead, replacing the F#5 with a C#5 on all but one repeat during the outro (the octave guitar parts are completely absent from the live version). The biggest note I have about this tab is that Guitar 2 is played on the top 3 strings on the album version, despite the fact Brad plays it higher up the neck on the D, G, and B strings live. The difference in timbre from the bottom note being played on a wound string vs. an unwound string is really obvious (Brad likely just plays it higher up the neck live to make the transition to the higher part played by Guitar 3 easier). Another little thing to pay close attention to, during the chorus after the first guitar solo, Guitar 1 does NOT go back up to the 5th fret at the end of the first line! It seemed weird to me that it only does that in one place the entire song, but I double-checked and that's really how it goes (the same is true of the bass part). Also, one BIG note about this song is that there are three different versions of it with variations in the guitar parts! This tab is for the original mix, which you'll find on original pressings of physical editions of the album, and any digital version released prior to 2012. In 2012, when the HDTracks and "Mastered for iTunes" digital editions of Minutes to Midnight were released, a different master copy of the album was used, probably by error (there were also alternate mixes of No Roads Left and Across the Line that appeared at this point). The version of Shadow of the Day on those releases was a significantly different mix that features a bunch of differences in the synth parts, along with the bass not entering until the second guitar solo, and, most notably from a guitar standpoint, Guitar 1 being completely absent (Rock Band 3 also uses this mix, so Guitar 1 also isn't found in the circulating multitracks for this song). This edition of Minutes to Midnight was the one used for all subsequent releases and featured on streaming services until 2021, when Warner finally replaced the digital/streaming versions of the three affected songs. You'd think the story would end there, but not quite. For some reason, while the 2021 "corrected" version of Shadow of the Day has all of the original bass and synth parts restored, Guitar 1's missing part was actually replaced with a re-recorded version played on a Strat using different fret positions and a couple note changes! I suspect that for some reason, the original track used for Guitar 1 was accidentally deleted from the song's Pro Tools session at some point and had to be replaced. I've tabbed both of those alternate versions of the song separately, so don't worry about the differences in the context of this particular tab, just know that this tab is specifically for the original 2007 release.
