Sorry for the late update this week, I've had the flu for a few days, and I've been busy with other projects with strict deadlines (more on that in a minute). Anyway, this week's cover is a partial re-recording of Session, I kept all of my improvised guitar work from the previous version but re-recorded the "real" guitar part at the end of the song because I thought the tone on the original version was pretty bad. Here's the new-and-hopefully-improved version:
(Those blue socks tho...)
Anyway, regarding my next couple videos, I was supposed to have my last couple isolated track reuploads done Sunday and today, but those plans got put on hold for a much more important project as I did end up getting a remix of Place to Start done for the Remix Post Traumatic contest! You can check out my entry here for now, it'll be up on my YouTube channel at some point after the contest is over: https://soundcloud.com/anthonystaten/place-to-start-a-staten-remix
Some fun facts about this remix!
-The first sound at the beginning of the track is actually a guitar. It's the neck pickup on my Strat run through a compressor, then all three sections of my EHX Epitome. Then I cut out the "center" section of each chord to remove the pick attack, flipped everything backwards to create the "swelling" effect, and ran the resulting sound through a bunch more effects in AmpliTube. The end result sounds like some crazy Deep Purple-esque distorted Hammond B3 thing. It's probably the proudest I've ever been of a guitar sound I've come up with.
-The overdubbed lead part in the intro is the first time I've used an EBow on one of my own recordings.
-This is the first time I've ever written my own lyrics for anything. Like literally ever, in my entire life.
-My vocals were recorded on the day my flu symptoms were at their worst. I was running a fever between 102 and 103 degrees all day, and could barely sing above whisper volume. I had the input gain on my mic pre cranked about as far up as it could go!
-The bass solo in the middle is a nod to a comment Phoenix made on the Member Guest podcast episode with Mike, about how there's a cameo by a bass in his video for Place to Start. I thought it would be a fun reference to actually put a bass solo in my remix.
-I hurt my left forearm pretty bad at work while I was working on this (I definitely don't recommend carrying a 200-pound adjustable base for a bed up a hill, in case anyone ever thought it would be a good idea to do so...). When I went to record some of my guitar parts, I found that I had no gripping strength in my left hand. Not wanting to lose any recording time, I ended up re-tuning my guitar and using a capo to record each chord without actually having to use my fretting hand, then edited the whole chord progression together!
Anyway, good luck to anyone else who entered the contest! As for what I've got coming up, I'm going to reupload Crawling tomorrow, but I'm going to save my other isolated track reupload (Shadow of the Day) for sometime next week. I'll also have my usual "cover of the week" up for the weekend. I'm about halfway through updating tabs for Reanimation, so you'll see those soon as well.
